Born in 1959, Mr Aleksashenko graduated from the Department of Economics at Moscow State University in 1986.
He worked at the Central Economics and Mathematics Institute at the USSR Academy of Sciences from 1986 to 1989 where he successfully defended his Candidate of Sciences’ (PhD) thesis in December 1989.
From January 1990 to April 1991, Mr Aleksashenko was the leading expert on the Commission for Economic Reform in the USSR Council of Ministers (Abalkin’s Commission); took part in outlining the 500 Days Programme in summer 1990.
From April 1991 to May 1993, he was Management Adviser at the Scientific and Industrial Union of the USSR (the Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs).
From May 1993 to March 1995, Mr Aleksashenko was Russia’s Deputy Minister of Finance for macroeconomic and tax policy, accounting and negotiations with the IMF; he also took on the additional task of state budget planning in summer 1994.
From December 1995 to October 1998, he was the Bank of Russia’s First Deputy Chairman for monetary policy, accounting and payments system, and negotiations with the IMF.
From January 1999, he was the Centre for Development analytic team Head.
From October 2000 to June 2004, Mr Aleksashenko was Interros Company Deputy CEO, Executive Director, Board of Directors’ Member.

From April 2006 to May 2008, Mr Aleksashenko was President of Merrill Lynch Russia.
Since December 2008, he has been Director of Macroeconomic research at HSE (Higher School of Economics).
Since October 1995, he has been a Member of the Expert Institute’s Scientific Council.
Since May 1997, he has been a Professor Emeritus at Jilin University, Changchun, China.
Since September 2001, he has been a Research Advisory Board Member at the Accounts Chamber of the Russian Federation.
From March 2008, he has been a member of the Bank of Russia Chairman’s Consultative Council.
From October 2008, a Member of Aeroflot Russian Airlines’ Board of Directors.
