Marat Guelman was born in 1960 in Kishinev. In 1983, he graduated from the Moscow Institute of Communications. He has been collecting contemporary art and organizing exhibits since 1988.
1990 — founded one of the first private galleries in Moscow, which exists to this day; it is one of the main elements of the Winzavod Centre for Contemporary Art.
1991 — one of the founders of the Art-Myth International Art Fair, which was held in Moscow in 1994. Art-Myth was reorganized as ART-Moscow, and Mr. Guelman remains a member of its board to this day.
1993 — organized the Higher School of Art Management at the Russian University of Theatre Arts (GITIS) in cooperation with G. G. Dadamyan.
1997 — Сo-founder of Russian Journal, lenta.ru, gazeta.ru.
2002–2004— Deputy General Director of Chanel One.
2005 — Cofounder of the M. Guelman Foundation for Supporting Contemporary Art.
2008 — The Russian Povera Curatorial Project in Perm.
Since 2009, Marat Guelman has been the Head of the PERMM Museum of Contemporary Art (Perm).
Since 2009, he has been a Member of the Public Chamber of the Russian Federation.
Since June of 2010, he has been the Head of the Cultural Alliance Project of the United Russia Party.
The M&J Guelman Gallery was one of the first in Post-Soviet Russia. In addition to regularly showing the work of selected artists, the M&J Guelman Gallery is famous as the organizer of large scale exhibits and has extensive experience in organizing exhibits abroad and works with major international institutions.
The PERMM Museum of Contemporary Art is the first museum of contemporary art in Perm. The PERMM museum is famous for such sensational exhibits as Russian Povera, the New Testament Project, MoskvApolis and Yakshcho/Yesli/If (ЯКЩО/Если/If).
